George Munkachy

1956-03-25 2024-01-29
George Munkachy, age 67, of Prattville, Alabama, and formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 29th, 2024 at 7:30pm surrounded by his family. George was born on March 25th, 1956, to parents Louis and Emily Munkachy in Budapest, Hungary, and arrived in the United States as a refugee with his parents as an infant. George earned his Bachelor’s degree at Duquesne University, his Master’s at Mansfield State University, and his PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Professionally, George was a psychologist in the US Air Force for 20 years where he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and touched many lives as a counselor and educator. After leaving the military, he served with the VA for eleven years before retiring in 2020 to pursue his passions. George loved to travel with his wife Paula, and together they went on many trips and adventures far and wide. He was an avid bicycling enthusiast, logging thousands of miles across many states and countries throughout his life. George was a devout and studious Catholic, and supported the parishes at St. Joseph in Prattville and Holy Family in Montgomery as a Catechist and active member for many years. He stayed fiercely loyal to his hometown of Pittsburgh, and followed Penguins’ hockey and Steelers’ football seasons with enthusiasm. He was a hobby pianist, master barbeque pit master, family archivist, dabbled with the didgeridoo, and enjoyed singing karaoke with his family.

Above all else, George was a loving husband, father, son, and brother. In 1978 he met the love of his life, Paula Munkachy, and the very next year they were married in Ayer, Massachusetts. George and Paula had four children together: Alexander, Nicholas, Stephanie, and Rebecca Munkachy, and was “Poppy” to two grandchildren, Conor and Norah Munkachy-- all of whom were the joy of his heart. He was a gentle and playful father and grandfather, a caring and devoted husband, a steadfast friend, and a kind soul. He is predeceased by his mother Emily Munkachy, and survived by his father Louis, his wife Paula, his sister Zsuzsi, his four children, and his two grandchildren. His laughter, silliness, and kind-hearted nature will be deeply and profoundly missed by his friends and family.

We love you so much, George, and will miss you so dearly.

A visitation and reception for George will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Ridout's-Brown-Service Prattville Chapel, 347 E Main St, Prattville, Alabama 36067.

A funeral service and interment will be held at the St. Bernard’s Abbey in Cullman, on February 10th, and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held at his family home on April 13th in Prattville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Bernard’s Abbey or to Catholic Charities to support the Church, which brought so much meaning to his life.

We love you, George, and will miss you dearly.
