Professor Marcelo Pimenta Marques passed away from malignant melanoma August 3, 2016 at the age of 60.
Marcelo Marques, the AFS student from Brazil during our senior year, was a full professor at the Department of Philosophy and the Postgraduate Program in Philosophy at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He left an academic legacy in which he developed teaching, research and administration programs, having trained generations of masters and doctoral students, since 1992, when he joined the University as a professor.
Marcelo’s impressive CV notes that he earned his high school diploma from Mt. Lebanon High School. Afterward, he went on to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), his home state in Brazil. Later, he earned a doctorate in Greek Philosophy from Université Marc Bloch de Strasbourg (France)—and his thesis actually won an award for the university thesis written in the best French. Following a post-doctoral year at the University of Pennsylvania, Marcelo returned to Brazil and became a full professor at his alma mater, UFMG, in Belo Horizonte.
Marcelo was an expert on the writings of Plato and Sophocles. He taught, wrote, interpreted, and translated the works of Plato and Sophocles from the original Ancient Greek into Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish, and French. He was the author and co-author of over 20 research articles and several books on the ancient Greek philosophers, the study of ethics, and global peace. He also translated two important textbooks on Plato from English into Portuguese.
Many tributes were published by his colleagues around the world: as an expert in Ancient Greek language and Plato, he was an invited lecturer to academic conferences in Europe, Mexico, the US, India, and South America.
“We will remember him as a teacher who was passionate about his job, as an advisor who gave each student particular attention, promoting them on every occasion, as an administrator who went to great lengths to make each project feasible and solve every problem”, says a note released by the Filosofia Antiga UFMG Group. “Through his numerous articles, translations and books, we are sure that his legacy will continue to inspire us on our journeys along the paths of Philosophy”, adds the text.
Throughout the decades, Marcelo stayed in touch and visited with his American host family. Marcelo is survived by his daughter, Elisa, a grandson, seven siblings, and the family of Alexandra (Swiecicki) Fairfield, his AFS host sister.

We were his host family during our senior year, we had always stayed in touch and visited back and forth. He is my daughter's godfather, or he preferred to be called her 'philosophy father'. We miss him terribly as a member of our extended family. Alex
